Segue

Nope, not those cool "people movers". Segue as in a "smooth, uninterrupted transition from one thing to another". Why segue? Because today of all days I heard this gem of a verb shortened into just "seg" and I don't know what to think. Laziness? Misunderstanding of pronunciation? Tongue isn't pronounced ton-GOO, or ton-GWEY. Maybe it was an attempt at making the old-fashioned sounding word trendy. I suppose I could have misheard and he was really talking about "the gladen, and other species of iris".

I am honestly perplexed because it was used as a gerund, as in "segging". Maybe this is a whole new word I don't even know about. Damn you urban slang!

The best part of the episode is that it brought up from the depths of my memories and incident in high school which I will describe in the 10 second play as follows:

Scene: Junior Advanced English classroom, 30-some 16 year olds forced to talk about severe run-on sentences and "The Scarlett Letter". The blackboard features a word of the day. This crisp fall day the word is segue.

(In walks Mz. Kitzke, a large old woman that teaches Advanced Sophomore English)

Mz. Kitzke (reading blackboard): "What's SEGOO?"

(Class turns to stare at Mz. Kitzke. Room implodes)

End Scene.
