Am I Doing This Right?

This is the question that I come back to most consistently whenever I think about my current lifestyle and what my future will bring. I have some self-confidence issues, and I'm usually pretty certain that I'm doing something wrong. Well, maybe not wrong, but that maybe I'm missing something or there's something that I should be doing in order to make life better/easier/simpler for myself.

Everyone and their mother has a blog, so I should be blogging to get credibility and brand recognition. (Trying, usually failing at this one)

Everyone at my professional level has a mentor and a life plan, so I should go call my old professors and set a tea time. (The one professor that I hung out with in college was a smidge flakey, and would probably just tell me to screw the plan and take more risks)

Everyone in my group of friends is married and owns either a house or a dog, so I should have an investment plan ready for all three of those occassi0ns. (Ok, at least that I have taken care of)

I'm frustrated that I worry so much and keep coming back to this question constantly. I feel as if I don't have as much confidence in myself as I did in high school. Which is saying lot, considering I was an overachieving anorexic back then.

I lamented this fact to my Beau, who, in his absolutely unprecedented wisdom, said "What's right for who? Screw it, you can't spend life worrying about something so subjective. Just live. Duh."

Well, he didn't say "duh" but he could have. Fairly simple, eh?

So I've been pondering my Beau's sage advice and thinking WWAD (What Would Anne (crazy professor) Do), and I think that it' just so easy to get caught up in what other people think, or what they might think, and it's so easy to spend time worrying about what might or might not happen, that I'm taking the easy way out by worrying and thinking and not actually doing anything.

So fuck it. I'm doing shit. I'm taking risks, like moving to Boston and taking up sewing. Why the hell not? I'm the only person that can account for my happiness, and I only have my own expectations to set and live up to. There's no reason, no cause and no time to worry about if it's right or wrong to anyone else.

Education

I've come to the conclusion that most blogs are stupid. There are some blogs that act as a creative outlet or mode of expression. I can deal with those - they can be artistically and intellectually interesting. And usually funny. I dig humor.

Most blogs are meant to be informative, authoritative, forums for social change and politics, or just a place to body snark.

But a lot of blogs are dumb, including this one. Most are out there, being vaguely written by a 20 -, 30-, or 40-something that thinks that they have something important to say. Well, a lot of us don't actually have anything to say. Some are just out there to feel important, look important, or act as if a blog is the first step on the way to being important.

I don't have anything important to say, and I say that because I don't know enough in any one area to give any insight. I'm educated, but I'm no expert.

So my new method is to work this blog as an educational tool. As I learn things I will post about my learning process and what helpful tools are out there, particularly on the financial front. The best way to learn is by doing, so I hope that by expanding my knowledge base I'm alsop able to expand my portfolio, understanding of finance and fitness, and of course my wardrobe.

New tools for learning I'm excited about this year:
1. I'm getting a sewing machine, something I've wanted to invest in for a long time. Now I can alter and fix articles of clothing at home rather than pawn projects off to my mother!
2. ING shares tools. Ridiculously easy way to invest in individual stocks and ETFs.
3. New gym membership with the rugby team. I'm pumped to get back into shape, as I am currently very squishy. Also, it will be fun to learn more about the body's healing process since I'm still in recovery from ACL reconstructive surgery. Can't wait to be able to run again - and to train for a marathon from the moment they say go!

New Year. Again.

Ahhhh......Yeah. New Year's. Woot.

No resolutions for me. I'm not good at actually keeping them. I'm good at following them for a ew months, a little longer than the national average, but then life hits and wind up followin a totally new direction and have new priorities and whatever I had previously been working on doesn't seem to matter as much any more. My work schedule is structured similarly, so maybe I'm little too influenced by that, but I think it's more interesting to have multiple tracks to follow than to stick with one thing all the time. Life's too short to have that consistent of an attention span.

Besides, I regularly have about 23 different goals going on in my head, each with their own plan of attack. Why limit myself to just one or two at a certain time of year?
